  • Prize: Lockly Vision Doorbell Camera Smart Lock (Satin Nickel or Matte Black) [ARV $400]

  • Odds: For every 170 Ducky Tran premium members by the time of judging, I will give out one (1) Lockly Vision

  • Contest Period: December 13, 2023 at 10 AM CST to December 19, 2023 at 10 PM CST

This week’s focus is physical wealth. When it is brought up, most people think about the foods we eat or how we maintain our physique, but forget about the most basic form of physical wealth, shelter. A category within shelter is protection, either from natural elements or man-made dangers. That’s where this week’s prize will excel.

This week’s prize is the Lockly Vision. I have a Lockly deadbolt and Ring doorbell camera for 3 years now, which when combined acts like the Lockly Vision. You can go read about it through its website and reviews, but let me tell you a few of my favorite features of the Lockly Vision.

  • You can enter your house with your fingerprint, PIN, key or even voice (through a phone assistant)!

  • You can let family/friends in your home remotely without being there or giving out your PIN/key.

  • You can talk to the Amazon drivers that drop off your packages without being home, or prove that they never showed up (had to do that twice).

  • It automatically locks after a preset time once I unlock the deadbolt (my wife is forgetful, I’m sure this is making it worst but at least the door is locked).

The Lockly has more features not listed above. For the protection and convenience it offers, the cost will seem minor after a few uses. I kept the original doorknob, because if I move, I plan to take my Lockly with me.

The Superpremium

This week’s Superpremium topic is Perot Museum of Nature and Science.

I must admit that I’m not a very good person to take to museums. I tend to just stroll through museums like I’m pushing a grocery cart near the adult diaper section of Target. I get too jittery at museums with just paintings and pictures of historical events.

BUT-- the Perot Museum is an exception. This museum is more of science lab. The exhibits and layout are so interactive that it pulls you into all the sections so you can find things to touch, throw, push, or race.

The Perot Museum is in Dallas, Texas. It is layered into 5 main floors with different themes. From rare Earth rocks, to dinosaurs, to meteorology, to space and more. Each theme has some interesting activities for kids while still having the museum aspect for the parents that don’t want to look a fool chasing kids through 2.5 feet high tunnels. Even though it is ginormous and is also surrounded by skyscrapers nearby, the building’s unique design makes it feel out of place (in a good way). Even the exterior is designed to be interactive for visitors, with the outside musical instruments and water features.

There’s just too much to write about, but let me list a few activities I really look forward to when I come to the Perot:

  • Earthquake simulator, I use it to shake my jitters away

  • Tornado simulator, I like to feel the vapor vortex run through my fingers

  • Sand elevation projection, my girls love playing here and I love cleaning the sand out of their shoes!

  • In the basement, there’s a child center that is just a miniature city for the kids. I like to help with the manual conveyor belt to move foam blocks that the kids use to build block structures

  • On the upper floor, there’s a complex vacuum tube system that move fabric in giant hamster tubes throughout a room, it’s addicting to shove different color fabrics and see where they shoot out of

  • In the basement, there’s a sports exhibit that allows you to race a T-Rex, which I obviously outran every time (not everyone knows how I speak, so I just want to say that I’m sarcastic if it isn’t obvious by now)

  • In the bird exhibit, there’s a flight simulator where you get to be a hawk

  • There’s a dance-off simulator in the dinosaur exhibit

  • The stairs from the basement to the first floor are piano keys, so I try to run as fast as I can up and down the stairs, like a child

I know I said a “few” then proceeded to list 100 activities, but the crazy thing is, that’s not even 10% of all the interactive activities at the Perot Museum. It is a must-see-at-least-once kind of place when in Dallas. If you have a family with small children, this is one of the best places to get a season pass for.

The Premium Core

This week’s Premium Core topic is the Ducky Tran store, shop.duckytran.com.

The last few weeks, I’ve been wearing my Ducky Tran shirts, baseball cap and ducky key chain everywhere. Many people have asked where they could purchase them. I showed them the Ducky Tran store and most of them get excited about the variety of products and how affordable the products were. This week, I want to give everyone an even crazier deal on branded merchandise.

The Accessible Core

Healthy Foods Are Too Expensive, Time-Consuming, and Disgusting

When talking about physical wealth, most people think about personal health, specifically dietary health or what you eat. Like the title indicates, there are always excuses to be made when something is difficult. This study shows that a large percentage of Americans believe healthy foods are too expensive, time-consuming and they lack cooking-skills.

I could discuss how to debunk these excuses, but unfortunately, I know even if I debunk them, they’ll still exist due to the difficulty associated with healthy eating. So instead, I’ll be discussing some strategies to make healthy eating feel easier, and by making it easier, you are less likely to make excuses.

1) Like most human interactions, eating is highly influenced by social norms. This study here shows that who you eat with will likely determine how you eat. So, the first step is to find people you want to eat like, so that their dietary habits will rub off on you over time. But don’t forget! It’s a two-way street, you can also be that friend that eats healthy around others so they can make better choices in foods.

2) Cooking can seem like a chore if it is done only when you need it and when it’s last minute. So instead, put it on the schedule. Make it date-night with the wife, or cooking party with your friends. Come together and meal prep for a few meals but make it an event. The joy from the party or date-night will reinforce the healthy cooking/eating habits, but also, you got others to do the same. #2 will now feed into #1 making a feedback loop that is productive to healthy eating.

3) When you plan to order food for take-out, instead of buying 1 pizza for $15, buy a $30 meal from a healthy choice restaurant. But here’s the trick, divide the $30 meal into two portions. Most of the time, healthy meals have protein dense items and/or vegetables, this makes you fuller with less calories. Also, by portioning your meals, you learn to control your diet better over-time. If you overeat, you are punished with a more expensive food bill, so it acts as negative reinforcement to your overeating. By ordering the food, it is likely to taste better and help with the notion that healthy foods don’t taste good. Like #1 says, share it with a friend and go on the journey together. Eventually, you’ll both come together and cook the same meal for each other and you’ll use #1, #2 and #3 in conjunction.

4) This last tip is just a reminder, a heart-attack is more expensive, time-consuming and taste terrible compared to a salad. Food for thought.

Issue 2 Community Poll Results

  1. It was nearly 50/50 on either you’re a raisin or drink the recommended amount of water daily. That makes me think if a person’s daily water intake is due to preference in taste or if drinking water feels like a chore to some.

  2. It was a 3-way split between eating balanced meals, eating 99% carbs, and eating whatever your family cooks. I’m pretty sure I can categorize everyone I know into these 3 categories. The funny thing is, the people that fall in each category have similar traits. It seems like personality traits may determine what you eat more than your actual taste buds?

  3. This poll question was about the quantity of content in the newsletter. Most of you voted perfect, one voted that it is so-so but you didn’t read all the sections anyways, and one said it was lacking content and left a comment.

THANK YOU! By commenting and giving me feedback, I can truly make changes and improve. I would like to respond to this comment as it can shed light for other members too.

Q: “An NY Times subscription offers greater value with more thoroughly researched articles at a lower cost. Where is the value?”

A: You have stated a fact and I do agree, if Ducky Tran was a newsletter only. Ducky Tran was never meant to be a newsletter only, even though, much of it is hosted through the newsletter. Ducky Tran is a community, such that it can grow, develop, give/get feedback and most importantly it is about the members and not the “content”. NY Times does not give out prizes, host events, offer deals, be ad-free and is generally catered to a reader-community. Ducky Tran offers many benefits other than articles in the newsletter and is meant to be a social-community. I know it may not seem like it right now since Ducky Tran is still young, but I’ve already seen its effects. In the last few weeks:

    1. I’ve seen members go to lunch due to the Go! Go! Curry! deal

    2. Members talking about the contents (main topic)

    3. Non-members talking to me about the Ducky Tran branded apparel/luggage (I’ve been wearing it A LOT)

    4. Members making dates for the facial deal

    5. Members reaching out to old friends (as referral but ended up connecting)

    6. Members introducing their co-workers to it, causing a large discussion about it the entire day

That’s my take and I hope that I was able to answer your concern on Ducky Tran’s value. At the end, it’s up to the member to decide if it’s worth it, I cannot advocate Ducky Tran for everyone, especially if you enjoy reading and need a lot more literature and do not participate in the other benefits. To be honest, for most of the members, this may already be too much reading for them. (Half of the members didn’t vote on any poll, which is at the end of the newsletters). Thank you for your comment!

Be Social to Become Social

I just wanted to share a story that I heard about this week. One of our newer members utilized the Go! Go! Curry! deal. After posting it on Instagram, she received some query from her friends about the deal. Shortly after I heard the story, we received 2 new members as a referral. This member didn’t think anything of posting about her lunch and did not think any referrals would come of it. However, like the title of the section indicates, if you are not social [or social media] about Ducky Tran, how can Ducky Tran be a social community. Please continue to spread the word by sharing of Ducky Tran content, deals, and prizes through word-of-mouth and social media so your friends can join and make this community a better social community. One of the best physical wealth protections isn’t from shelter, but from the people around you. Your family and friends can sometimes be that protection you unexpectedly need.

Just a reminder, if you don’t submit for the contests, you can’t expect to win!
